The Iron Dome is a mobile missile defense system intended to counter the threat posed by short-range artillery rockets and 155mm artillery shells with ranges of up to 70 kilometers. This innovative air defense system is designed for operation in all weather conditions, including low clouds, rain, dust storms or fog. The missile system can handle multiple, simultaneous threats with a high effective discrimination capability and reduced collateral damage. In October 2008 the Iron Dome was in the testing phase of development.

The Iron Dome system along with the David's Sling have been selected by the Israeli Defense Ministry as the best double-tiered solutions for critical air defense missions. Both systems offer the most comprehensive defense solution against a wide range of threats in a relatively short development cycle and at low cost. The Iron Dome air defense system comprises a battle management and control (BMC) post, detection and tracking radar system and several vertically launched interceptor missile firing units. All of these items are mounted on self-powered or towed platforms.

The radar system detects and identifies the threat and monitors its trajectory. The data is transmitted to the BMC post which analyzes the trajectory and estimates the impact point. If the system assesses that the target poses a grave threat then an interceptor is launched at the target. The BMC sends target's trajectory updates to the interceptor via uplink communication. The Iron Dome interceptor is fitted with a special warhead that detonates any target in the air within seconds using a proximity fuze. The neutralization is expected to happen over a neutral area.

The Iron Dome of the Seas (C-Dome) is a shipborne version of the Iron Dome missile defense system intended to counter the threat posed by short-range artillery rockets and 155mm artillery shells with ranges of up to 70 kilometers. The new air defense system interfaces with the ship's radar system to acquire the incoming threats. The Iron Dome of the Seas was first deployed by Israel aboard one of its Saar 5 corvettes in November 2017. The Saar 6 corvettes are also intended to be equipped with the new missile system in the 2019-2020 timeframe.
